Through collaboration with several G5 modders (several of whom have multiple G5s under their belt) we have come up with the answers to the following commonly-asked questions. On top of all the guides and tutorials, we wanted to offer a general FAQ for all of those little bits of information that don’t quite require a guide. The first thing any of us would suggest you do (after reading the FAQ), is take a look at some of the mods people have already done to get some inspiration. Any images presented here remain the property of their respective owners, and are shown here for instructional purposes only. This is the original G5 resource page – some links may be outdated but I have tried to port over as much info as possible. You will need a good amount of tools, parts and know-how, which is exactly why this resource page came into being. That said, modding one for mATX/ATX isn’t just a matter of replacing the motherboard. Many of us are drawn to the G5 (and mac pro) cases by the sheer elegance of their design, and there’s no doubt that they are beautiful outside and in. There are hundreds of steps, with plenty of muttered curses and band-aids along the way but don’t let that put you off! It is one of the most enjoyable case mods (and cases) that you can put your time into.

Ultimately, the process was longer and harder than I had anticipated, mostly due to Apple’s absurdly custom hardware design - but now I have the G5 I’ve always wanted running at Mac Pro speeds for less than the cost of a MacBook Pro.
